Our Programmes
Stories in Motion
Since 2011, Okonkwo Foundation has stood beside Nigeria’s most vulnerable mothers and children, delivering care, hope, and practical skills that break the cycle of poverty and illness.
Maternal & Child Health Outreach
“If the mountain won’t go to the clinic, the clinic must go to the mountain.”
Every market day before dawn, our solar-powered mobile clinic rolls into hard-to-reach settlements—places where the nearest hospital may be 20 kilometers of untarred road away. Inside that bright-green van, midwives perform antenatal checks, pharmacists dispense de-worming tablets, and community health educators use flipbooks to demystify breastfeeding and malaria prevention. We pair each medical visit with Mama Circles peer-support groups, where women swap tips, track baby milestones, and share their own triumphs and anxieties.
Impact snapshot: In 2024 alone, the programme recorded zero maternal deaths across 57 partner communities, vaccinated over 12,000 children under five, and corrected 1,600 cases of severe childhood malnutrition within three months of diagnosis.
Skills Empowerment
“From idle hands to income-earning hands.”
Poverty is often more about lack of opportunity than lack of effort. Our Skills Empowerment hubs convert old school halls, church basements, and even unused bus garages into buzzing workshops where women and children learn practical vocations aligned to local markets; tailoring, agro-processing, digital marketing, phone-repair, and soap-making. Each cohort receives:
- Technical training led by certified instructors.
- Business literacy classes covering pricing, record-keeping, and customer service.
- Starter kits (e.g., sewing machine, smartphone, mini grater) so graduates can hit the ground running.
- Mentorship and cooperative savings groups that pool resources for bulk raw-material purchases and emergency loans.
Success, for us, is a mother who can pay school fees on time, stock nutritious food at home, and negotiate with suppliers like a pro. Grace, a 29-year-old mother of two, sums it up: “I don’t queue for hand-outs anymore; I queue at the bank to deposit profits.”
Poverty Relief & Social Support
“Because tomorrow’s dream is hard to picture on an empty stomach.”
For households in acute crisis, such as fire, flood, or sudden illness, long-term training feels like a luxury. Our emergency teams respond within 72 hours, delivering food packs, mosquito nets, sanitary kits, and small cash grants to stabilise families first. We also collaborate with hospitals to create “Hope Accounts,” settling life-saving surgical or neonatal bills that would otherwise plunge widows and orphaned children into debt slavery. Social workers then connect beneficiaries to counseling, legal aid, school enrollment drives, and, where possible, the Skills Empowerment pipeline, turning relief into resilience.
